California Applications Open August 1 — What's Different About UC and Cal State

If your student is applying to any University of California or Cal State campus, August 1 matters. That's when both application portals open for the 2026-27 cycle — and for families who haven't been through this before, what you find there is usually a surprise.

The UC and Cal State applications are not the Common App. They don't share a login, don't pull from a Common App profile, and what you write for one has nothing to do with the other. A student applying to UCLA, Cal Poly SLO, and USC is managing three completely separate applications.

Here is what each system actually looks like.

The UC Application

The University of California system has nine undergraduate campuses:

●      Berkeley · Los Angeles · San Diego · Davis · Santa Barbara · Irvine · Santa Cruz · Riverside · Merced

One application covers all nine. Students fill it out once, check which campuses they want, and pay a per-campus fee. The portal opens August 1 — but the submission window doesn't open until October 1 and closes November 30. That deadline applies to every UC campus without exception. There is no Early Action, Early Decision, or rolling admission.

The writing component: Personal Insight Questions

Instead of a personal statement, UC uses eight short prompts called Personal Insight Questions (PIQs). Applicants choose four to answer — 350 words each. The same four responses go to every campus applied to. No writing separate essays for Berkeley versus San Diego.

●      8 prompts total, choose any 4

●      350 words maximum per response — the portal enforces this; it will not let you submit if you go over

●      Topics include: leadership, creativity, a significant challenge, an academic subject that inspires you, and a catch-all

●      Unchanged for 2026-27: same prompts, same word limit, same choose-four rule

Where it goes on the Common Application: these are separate applications — UC PIQs do not carry over to the Common App or to Cal State.

Practical note: the UC portal has historically gotten sluggish in the days before November 30. Build in a buffer — aim to submit by November 25.

Cal State Apply

The California State University system has 22 universities, all covered by one application — Cal State Apply — through a separate portal with a separate login. Fee waivers are available for eligible students.

Key dates

●      August 1: portal opens; students can start entering information

●      October 1: submission window opens; two sections (high school coursework and A-G matching) are hidden until this date

●      November 30: priority deadline — same date as UC this cycle (Cal State historically closed December 1; dates are now aligned)

What surprises most families

Cal State requires no essay for general admission. No personal statement, no short answers. Admission is based primarily on GPA and coursework. The application is largely biographical data entry.

The exception: the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) requires an essay and two recommendations. Some impacted campuses and majors have supplemental requirements — check each campus individually.

Private California Schools: A Third, Separate Track

If your student is applying to any of the following, they use the Common App — completely separate account, completely separate deadlines:

●      USC · Stanford · Pepperdine · Santa Clara · Loyola Marymount (LMU)

●      The Claremont Colleges (Pomona, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Scripps, Pitzer)

●      Chapman · Occidental · Caltech · University of San Diego

The deadline difference matters. Many private schools have Early Action or Early Decision deadlines on November 1 — before the UC/Cal State November 30 window. Regular Decision deadlines often run January through February.

A senior applying to a mix of UC, Cal State, and private California schools is managing three distinct tracks with three different timelines. The thing that gets families into trouble is treating them as versions of the same process.

What to Do in August

Create the accounts now.

●      UC application: apply.universityofcalifornia.edu

●      Cal State Apply: calstate.edu/apply

Just opening the accounts in August tells you more than any guide can — you will see exactly what information you need and what the writing requirements actually look like.

Start drafting UC PIQs over the summer.

The prompts are stable and available right now. Four prompts at 350 words each is less than the Common App personal statement in total — but it takes longer than students expect because each one has to stand on its own. Students who start in July finish November in much better shape than students who open the portal in October.

Map the full deadline picture.

If there are private schools on the list with November 1 EA/ED deadlines, those come before UC/Cal State closes. The Common App personal statement, supplements, and recommendation letter requests all need to be in motion before November.

Don't conflate the systems.

●      UC PIQs do not carry over to private school supplements

●      Cal State does not require essays at all

●      The Common App personal statement is not interchangeable with a UC PIQ

●      Each application is its own project with its own login

The good news about August 1: you have time. The applications don't close for four months. But families who open the portals early and start drafting have a materially different fall than families who open them in October. The work isn't hard — it's mostly a matter of not waiting until there's no runway left.
