Transylvania University
Lexington, KY www.transy.edu 1,100 undergrads Mid-range SAT 1020-1220
On our visit to Transy we were greeted with open arms by the admissions office, and immediately felt comfortable. This attractive, traditional, red-bricked campus is tucked away in one corner of Lexington – a very manageable city – and was built 12 years before Kentucky gained statehood. The neighborhood is residential and well established; downtown is a mere 4 blocks away. Clean and well-appointed, the college is affiliated with the Christian Church but does not exude a churchy presence. More than 2/3 of the students take advantage of the study aboard program. Greek life is important to about 50% of the students, and they have a great following of their D3 sports. Strong academic programs at Transy include; Business, Foreign Languages, Psychology and Biology. Even in these economically challenging times, the school seems to have money for both merit and financial assistance. The benefits of being in a city are evident. The airport is not too far away and the out of state population is approximately 11%. The university welcomed a new president in 2010. BTW the name Transylvania is Latin and means "across the woods."
