Birmingham Southern College
Birmingham, AL www.bsc.edu Size 1,500 undergrads /private college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Middle SAT in the range of 1050-1250.
BSC Top majors include: Business/Marketing, English, Biology, and Visual / Performing Arts. 43% of students are from out of the state.
BSC is a quick 10 minute drive from the airport and within the city limits of Birmingham. The large, contained campus is not your typical urban campus; it is comprised of close to 200 acres of beautiful grounds and well maintained brick buildings in a park like setting. Housing is guaranteed for all undergraduate students and 85% of students live on-campus. In 2010 the college dealt with financial concerns by cutting 5 smaller major programs and by hiring a new president who came on this year taking no initial salary. When visiting, it was evident that the staff and students are very much supportive of the new president’s vision and strategic plan. The school boasts top notch athletic facilities in the NCAA Division 3 bracket. While the Panthers have football, lacrosse, golf and the usual teams found at liberal arts colleges, they also have a women’s rifle team. They are currently seeking a more diversified student population. Overall, we found BSC to have a certain southern charm and could be a great match for a solid B student.
